Alaska's best-selling boat brand, fully rigged for Kachemak Bay

The Sea Runner is a 2009 22-foot Hewescraft with a 225-horsepower Suzuki main engine and Suzuki kicker. It gets up on step in less than 5 seconds and planes like a dream. It exceeds US Coast Guard flotation requirements for vessel safety and its thick aluminum hull is built with a lifetime warranty.
Two Garmin GPS chartplotter/fishfinder screens run navigation and sonar, one large touchscreen for charts and one button-controlled unit for sonar backup. Three VHF radios on board: two hard-mounted GPS-linked units with built-in distress buttons, one handheld with its own independent battery. Channel 16 is the Coast Guard channel. WX channel 2 is local NOAA weather on continuous loop.
Unlike the McGray and Gondola which have self-bailing or sealed bilge systems, the Sea Runner's open rear deck drains into the bilge and relies on three electric pumps to remove water. All three are set to automatic. A bilge alarm will sound if water levels rise unexpectedly — if it goes off, check the bilge and use the manual pump backup in the rear storage if needed.
Electric windlass on the bow. Unlike the Gondola's automatic windlass, the Sea Runner uses a rope-wrap foot-switch design: bring the anchor line across the top of the spool, wrap it twice, then step on the foot switch while pulling to engage. The windlass pulls rope only — the final 20 feet of chain must be pulled by hand. Anchor off the bow only, never the stern.
The Sea Runner's kicker has a manual choke, unlike the other two boats. Some days it needs choke, some days it doesn't depending on temperature. Pull with no choke first; if it doesn't start after a few pulls, pull the choke out and try again. Press and hold the red button to shut it down. Most renters use the main engine for trolling — it goes slow enough — and keep the kicker as emergency backup.
Two manual downriggers are stored in the front compartment in the cabin. They slide into base mounts and lock with a white clip. Let line out by pulling the clutch lever back; the farther back, the faster the descent. Release to lock at depth. Manual counter on each unit — if the reading is off, disengage from the gear and spin to zero by hand.
